Sarkozy Walks Out Of CBS Interview

Posted by Samantha Louis on Wed, 10/31/2007 - 10:15am
With Teflon for skin, politicians are preternaturally disposed to deflecting the toughest questions, criticisms, and accusations. But it seems even these rare birds can get their feathers in a bunch over soured relationships and faltering marriages.

Those of you who caught CBS's "60 Minutes" on Sunday were witness to just such a demonstration from French President Nicolas Sarkozy when he abruptly excused himself from an interview with (the fabulous) Lesley Stahl after she broached the issue of his wife and her recent departure from the world stage.

At the time of the interview, wife Cécilia Sarkozy hadn't been seen since July and rumors abounded over the fate of the presidential marriage. Two weeks later, Sarkozy's office announced it was over.

"If I had to say something about Cécilia, I would certainly not do so here," Sarkozy coldly informed Stahl before stripping off his microphone.

"What was unfair?" Stahl pleaded.

"Au revoir, merci et bon courage (Good-bye, thank-you and good luck)," Sarkozy said on his way out.

This isn't the first time Sarkozy's lost his cool over Cécilia. A French journalist who asked about the marriage at a press conference was denounced straight away for the media's "inelegance" in pursuing the matter.

Still, other than the occasional outburst, there is "no evidence that the end of Cécilia is affecting [Sarkozy's] passion and drive in his work," says Stahl. So, while politicians may not be immune to the stress of divorce, it doesn't seem to be any match for their personal ambition and acute narcissism.

Richards Brings The Pain

Posted by Samantha Louis on Thu, 09/20/2007 - 11:00am

Charlie Sheen is seriously paying for his sins of the ‘80s at the hand of ex Denise Richards. Now the out-of-work actress is trying to take away Sheen's overnight privileges with the couple's two daughters, and airing some foul-smelling laundry to do it.

According to court papers filed by Richards this week and obtained by Access Hollywood, Sheen is still exhibiting "inappropriate behavior... and conduct," including "his attraction to underage women and his sexual explicitness on the Internet, including revealing his private parts."

Richards' criticism extends to Sheen's new fiancée, Brooke Mueller, who, according to Richards, drummed up press for her marriage with Sheen at the expense of the children. In the filing, Richards claims Sheen and Mueller told her they "did it for the press... he wanted to get the cover of People and Us magazine."

Richards even managed to bring her nanny into the action. In a declaration included in the court filing, the nanny, Diana Alvarez claims she witnessed Sheen hitting the family dogs, and threatening to hit the couple's daughter Sam. Alvarez also alleges Sheen "yells... and routinely curses" in front of the children, and "completely ignores" the youngest daughter Lola.

Just so we're on the same page, last month Richards was lambasting Sheen for his lack of discretion because of statements he made in the press. This is just more proof that basic principals of reason go entirely out the door during a nasty divorce. There is no way we've heard the last from Richards on this one, as the out-of-work actor has plenty of time on her hands to make life miserable for Sheen.

A serious charitable grant. A commitment to rid the world of some debilitating illness. Putting on some underwear.

These are just a few things that — if we were advising Britney Spears — we might suggest to distract the world from her recent "comeback" at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Sadly, though, the queen of pop, as in the sound something makes when it explodes, collapses, or "snaps," has decided to refocus her attention — and the media circus that follows her every move — on K-Fed. Terrific.

Out of the blue, Spears has called for a meeting with her grub-like ex to bring some closure to their divorce and custody settlement.

She wants to "put an end to this public debacle," a source close to Spears is telling People magazine.

Good luck with that.

True to form, the Fed is reportedly holding out for more cash. "Kevin [has] refused," the source tells People. "He needs more money so he's determined to win this."

Spears already pays Federline $20,000 a month in spousal support, but the aspiring pimp is reportedly broke as a result of 'business expenses,' according to court documents filed in August.

Witherspoon Withered By Divorce

Posted by Samantha Louis on Thu, 09/13/2007 - 11:00am
When we think of Reese Witherspoon, we think feisty. Indomitable. A positive force of nature.

That's why it's so hard to now learn — after nearly a year of silence - how Witherspoon was so completely overwhelmed by her split from fellow actor Ryan Phillippe.

"Right around Christmastime I was sitting in a parking lot and I felt like I just couldn't get out of the car," she says in the October issue of Elle magazine. "And I thought, OK, half of the parking lot has dealt with [a breakup]."

"There's this moment in Walk the Line where June Carter says, 'I was never aware of how much I was seen.' I was very aware of how much I was seen. It was this moment of self-discovery and loss of identity and who was stepping out of the car — you know?"

It's easy to recommend wearing divorce like a loose garment, but the impracticality of that exercise only hits home when we hear of someone as strong as Witherspoon wilting under the pressure.

On top of all the lawyers, the fighting and the bitterness, there's that realization that divorce has become part of your identity — ingrained in your being. Sure, Witherspoon literally had the world watching on, but divorce, as her experience shows, can overwhelm even the best of us.

We like to think that country singers make up the conservative end of the music biz. But, amid a nasty divorce, country star Sara Evans is being accused by her husband, Craig Schelske, of nearly a dozen affairs.

Nothing has been proven, but a 118-page court document filed this week by Schelske's lawyers asks Evans to admit to affairs or romantic relationships with at least eleven people, including members of her band, members of the band 3 Doors Down, Kenny Chesney, Richard Marx and Tony Dovolani, her former Dancing With The Stars partner.

Evans filed for divorce late last year after Schelske alleged that he learned of his wife's "intimate relationship" during a dinner at a swank Los Angeles restaurant. Evans, meanwhile, has previously alleged that there are nude photos of Schelske having sex with other women.

Evans has not yet responded to the court filings, which offer no evidence that Evans actually had any of the eleven alleged affairs. So, at this point, we can only assume that Schelske is using his extremely vivid imagination to drag his famous wife's name through the mud; there's some truth to his accusation; or a combination of the two. Either way, Evans and her ex-hubby are giving the rockers and rappers who round out the industry a run for their money. Regardless of genre, artistic privilege can only be taken so far.

Resolution seems to have finally arrived for golfer Greg Norman and his wife of 25-years, Laura.

The two — who've been slogging through a nasty $500 million divorce — signed divorce papers this week in a Florida court, and agreed to divide their vast business empire.

While the terms of the deal remain sealed, Laura stands to receive the proceeds from the sale of their $21-million Jupiter Island mansion in Florida, along with a share of Norman's $500-million fortune.

Last we heard from these two, their camps were battling over arguably defamatory accusations that Norman had cut off Laura from her home and credit cards.

Some minor matters are yet to be resolved — like who's responsible for the tax liability on their private jet — but the ex-pair seem ready to put the whole mess behind them. Press reports noted both Norman and Laura appeared emotionally shaken in court. With the heat of the battle over, it looks like these two are beaten and bruised.

Just a day after giving his wife notice, it's becoming clear why Shaquille O'Neal's lawyers were so well prepared for the eventual split.

It appears - at least during Shaq's engagement to his soon-to-be-ex-wife Shaunie - the NBA star was spending some serious quality time with Karinne Steffans, the infamous "Video Vixen" who's been indulged by a list of celebs, including Jay-Z and Usher.

"On the first date, he gave me $10,000," Steffans told The New York Daily News. "Over four months, [he spent] more than $40,000 on me, as far as I can remember."

Coming out swinging, Shaq is accusing Shaunie of being "secretive about her assets," according to a petition filed by his lawyer, Ira Elegant, in Miami-Dade Circuit Court on Tuesday.

The petition also requests that the court require Shaunie to give a "correct accounting of all money, funds, stocks, bonds, and other securities (including bearer securities)" obtained during their marriage. An existing pre-nuptial already "contains extensive provisions providing for confidentiality and non-disclosure," according to the petition.

We're dying to see what comes to light tomorrow. We're just hoping that Shaunie's lawyers are as well prepared to deal with whatever new revelations should service in the coming day and months. Particularly with Steffans now involved, we know which team we're rooting for. Go, Shaunie! Go!

Shaq Benches Wife

Posted by Samantha Louis on Wed, 09/05/2007 - 12:15pm
At least for now, it looks like Shaquille O'Neal has had his fill of the married life. The NBA goliath filed for divorce from his wife Shaunie in Miami on Tuesday after nearly five years of marriage and four children.

By the looks of it, Shaq, 35, was well prepared for his eventual spit from Shaunie, 32 who was his long-term girlfriend before the two made it official in late 2002. The couple's home, on Miami Beach's exclusive Star Island, was already up for sale for $32 million.

An existing pre-nuptial "contains extensive provisions providing for confidentiality and non-disclosure," according to a petition filed by O'Neal's lawyer, Ira Elegant, in Miami-Dade Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Ready to play hardball, Shaq — who makes a cool $20 million a year playing for the Miami Heat — said in the petition that Shaunie has been "secretive about her assets ... particularly with respect to certain properties owned or titled in either [her] name alone or in other entities." The petition requests that the court require Shaunie to give a "correct accounting of all money, funds, stocks, bonds, and other securities (including bearer securities)" obtained during their marriage.

Personally, we wouldn't want to tangle with someone of Shaq's superhuman girth, but Shaunie is obviously a tough cookie. A lesser woman would never have made it this far with the O'Neal. Either way, Shaunie and the kids will be well cared for. The fight, if there is one, will likely be had over the terms of that care.

In New York, the gossip mill is working overtime to expose Paula Zahn's steamy sex diary that allegedly details her trysts with married lover Paul Fribourg. Both Zahn's marriage to real estate tycoon Richard Cohen and her lover's marriage are over. Kaput.

The latest jab in the high-profile split comes from a so-called pal of the anchorwoman who says it was Cohen's cold sexless ways that alienated Zahn. "She and Richard weren't having sex for some time," the friend "confided" to the [New York] Daily News.

Friends of the real estate developer, meanwhile, are pointing to Zahn's sex diary, which Cohen himself discovered, that paints in "lurid" detail his wife's affair with Fribourg, who's been a friend of the couple. Reportedly, the Fribourgs, Zahn and Cohen vacationed and socialized together. "Richard felt like he'd been stabbed in the heart twice when he found out his wife had been cheating with one of his best friends," one of Cohen's buddies tells the News.

According to Cohen's friend, Zahn's claims of a sexless marriage are designed to "undermine their prenup." Last week, Zahn filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court alleging Cohen mismanaged the $25 million she invested with him. Zahn also claims Cohen is trying to gain "some sort of tactical advantage" by withholding financial information from her.

Neither Cohen, 59, nor Zahn, 51, has filed for divorce, but Zahn has already left the Fifth Ave. co-op the two once shared with their three children--daughter Haley, 17, and sons Jared, 13, and Austin, 10. Fribourg and his estranged wife Josabeth are in the middle of a divorce. Zahn and Fribourg's affair allegedly began a year ago.

For Paula Zahn, a graceful exit from her 20-year marriage looks lost now that her husband, real estate developer Richard Cohen, has found her tryst-filled diary. "Paula's love book," as sources describe it to the New York Daily News, documents in "quite lurid" detail, her affair with married ContiGroup CEO Paul Fribourg.

And to make matters worse, since the ex-CNN anchor's husband discovered the journal with their 17-year-old daughter, he's been sharing some of its spicier bits with people around town, sources tell the News. Zahn announced she was divorcing Cohen, a multi-millionaire, in April. The couple have two minor kids.

Last Friday, Zahn filed a 60-page suit in Manhattan Supreme Court requesting a forensic accounting of some $25 million that she had entrusted to Cohen. He has reportedly refused to address issues of child custody and visitation "unless she signs away her right to an accounting," source tell the News. "He won't budge. He's so bitter."
