Man Won’t Divorce Wife Who Had Affair with Boy

An unnamed Singaporean woman who’s been doing some rather heavy breathing on the side can now breathe sigh of relief.  While the 32-year-old primary school teacher and mother of two will spend the next 10 months in jail for having sex with a minor, her husband has vowed not to divorce her over the scandal.

“He is supporting her throughout this ordeal,” the man’s 60-year-old mother told Singapore’s The Electric New Paper (which wins my award for most super-terrific-futuristic-fun-times periodical name ever).

The teacher is the first woman in Singapore to be jailed for sex with an underage boy. Until amendments were made to the penal code (titter!) last year, it was not unlawful for a woman to have sexual relations with a boy under age 16.

According to her testimony, the teacher had sex with the minor six times.

While the convicted teacher’s husband was not identified and did not speak to the media, his mother has proven to be very chatty.  She reports her son is “heartbroken that his wife betrayed him,” but has “forgiven” his wife and is determined to keep the family together.

As for what the couple plans to tell their children when they notice their mother is not around (which shouldn’t take long): “We will tell them that she has gone overseas to work,” the beleaguered husband’s mother said.

Well, I guess this is one of those hard ones to explain away. But me thinks they better start saving up for long-term therapy ASAP for when the kids eventually find out the truth.

According to the psychiatric write-up, the teacher was going through a very stressful time, and suffers from chronic low self-esteem.  It must have been low indeed if lines like, “Uhm, Mrs. teacher lady? You’re, like, totally hot…” spurred adulterous behavior.
