It's Blonde on Blonde

On Saturday, at sunset in the Bahamas, the tennis star Chris Evert had her second encore wedding, this time to the golf star Greg Norman. There were 140 guests including Matt Lauer and the singer-songwriter Corey Hart, according to People magazine.

More importantly, her three sons were part of the wedding party: the youngest, Colton, as the ring bearer and the teenagers Nicky and Alex walking her down the aisle in her Carolina Herrera dress. Her sister was her maid of honor.

His daughter, Morgan, 23, was there to watch and his son, Gregory Jr., 21, served as his best man. The newlyweds, both 53, got engaged six months ago while traveling in South Africa.

And who says it can’t be a romantic wedding even if she is marrying her ex-husband’s best friend?

The festivities, which began on Friday night with golf and tennis before the rehearsal dinner, were estimated to cost $2 million. The couple took over the entire One and Only Ocean Club Hotel on Paradise Island for their guests and, according to various media outlets (none of them allowed even close), exchanged their vows either on a beach, in a fenced off area, at the Blue Shark Golf Club or on the top of a hill under “the dramatic arches of the replica of a 12th-century Augustinian cloister boasting spectacular sunset views over Nassau Harbour.”

All agreed vows were exchanged at sunset.

The hacks had better luck getting details out of resort staff and wedding planners, who revealed that the tables were decorated with six-foot centerpieces of cream and pale pink roses, with glass hanging lanterns holding floating candles, and that the gardens were inspired by those at the Chateau de Versailles in France, and held bronze and marble statues from Europe.

But back to that business about Evert marrying her ex-husband’s best friend.

Her ex and father of her sons, Andy Mill, was an Olympic skier. They married in 1988 and moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where they socialized with Greg Norman and Laura Andrassy.

In October 2006, Evert and Norman began to be seen together, no spouses in sight. That same month, Evert and Mill announced their decision to divorce.

Evert filed for divorce in November, and got primary custody of their three young sons and their Boca Raton home. The divorce was made final in December, 2006, with Evert giving her ex-husband some $8.7 million, their $5 million ski home in Aspen, a Porsche and other properties. They had been married 18 years.

The Greg Norman divorce from Laura Andrassy was somewhat rougher. He told her he wanted a divorce in May 2006 by phone. (Well, at least it wasn’t a Post-It note.) He filed in July 2006.

Andrassy made an emergency request for financial relief, claiming that her husband changed the locks on their $21 million mansion in Jupiter, and cut off her credit cards in an attempt to “coerce” and “starve her out” during the divorce.

Norman’s lawyers ridiculed Andrassy’s demand for half of his money (estimated at some $500 million), saying that she didn’t teach him how to swing a golf club. It seemed in September 2007 that they had reached an agreement, which was signed by a judge.

That’s when things got really nasty. Andrassy asked for Evert to be deposed on a tax matter, having to do with the private use of his company jet. In the end, Evert wasn’t called but Norman sued his wife for breaking a confidentiality agreement about talking to the press. His wife responded that she didn’t talk about him to the media, she talked about Evert. What is is.

Norman paid his ex-wife an amount reported to be $100 million. They were married for 25 years.

Andy Mill had been quoted saying that his former best friend “stole” Evert from him. Before the wedding Mill was still bitter. He cracked to The Palm Beach Post, “I'm bummed out because I've been waiting for a phone call to tell me whether I'd be the first-ever best man and bridesmaid at the same event. It hasn't come yet."

We didn’t get it either (unless he was planning on getting a sex change) but when you’re bitter, you don’t necessarily make sense. And speaking of bitter, Norman's ex-wife had this to say: “They deserve each other.”

And now Evert and Norman have each other, and five children ranging in age from 12 to 23. Out of all of this, two people are blissfully happy, and who is to deny them that right?
