Egyptian Communities Can Force Couples to Divorce
We've all had friends that we thought, "Boy, she made a mistake by marrying that guy." Now you can do something about it: Force a divorce! Everyone in favor of a divorce say "aye"…
Ok, not really, but close. According to global news site UPI.com, a Muslim cleric has issued a fatwa (a legally binding ruling from a religious leader) that allows community members to obtain on divorce on a couple's behalf.
If neighbors and/or family members believe a couple's differences to be beyond repair, they can file for the couple. If the community members can present solid evidence that husband and wife cannot live amicably, the court will divorce them.
Usually, FWW reports from the Middle East involve forced marriages, underage marriages, illegal marriages, but this is a new one: a forced divorce. But it does seem to fall in line with the public's involvement in what Western ideology deems a private matter. Sarah Farthing knows all too well the cultural clash, especially when it comes to relationships, as she explains in her video blog, "I May Die Saying No." Check it out.
