Federal Pro-Marriage Campaign Targets "Generation Why?"

reluctant 18-30 year olds pushed to get hitched

Posted to by M Haas on Wed, 02/25/2009 - 4:36pm

Like a modern day version of the Monroe Bomb from WWII, the Federal government is launching a $5 million media assault on marriage-ripe-but-motivationally-retarded 18 to 30-year-olds for the purpose of extolling the virtues of marriage.

The campaign, which our tax dollars are funding, is being spearheaded by the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center (NHMRC), part of the Bush administration’s Healthy Marriage Initiative. Their media blitz will include radio spots, magazine and public transit ads, and websites that young people populate, such as Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube (where they better use monkeys, groin injuries, and/or some form of humiliation).

In short, nowhere is safe.  The message will be everywhere. Creeeeeepy…

According to Paul Amato, Pennsylvania State University sociologist, advisor to the NHMRC, and overall marriage enthusiast, "We're not telling people, 'Get married,' but 'Don’t underestimate the benefits of marriage'."

Man Divorces Wife Over Take-Out Food

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Tue, 02/24/2009 - 3:04pm

We'll give one guess from which country this divorce story originated. Yes, India!

Tired of take-out? It’s time to split! As reported by The Croatian Times, an Indian husband has taken his wife to divorce court because she has served him nothing but take-out since they married in December 2007.

From the piece:

"I even taught her to cook as well but it was of no help. I am just tired of eating take-away food from restaurants and stalls. I need a divorce," he told the court.

We’ve heard all sorts of oddball reasons for divorce in India: acne, smoking, a disagreement about room temperature — but too much take-out? Doesn’t sound like such an issue. (If only we could opt for to-go every night. Sounds like a dream!)

Indiana Woman Holds World Record for Most Marriages

Posted to by M Haas on Fri, 02/20/2009 - 11:45am

What do a convict, a preacher, a musician, a couple of bartenders, homeless men, electricians, and at least two gay men (not coupled), have in common? (insert snare drum roll)…wait for it…

Answer: Linda Lou Wolfe!! (cue cymbals crashing).

The name doesn’t ring a bell?  Then you must not be one of the 23 men she has been married to over the past 50 years, earning her the Guinness World Record for most married woman in history.

While Wolfe, 68, can't remember her husbands in order of matrimony, she does recall:

Her longest marriage: 7 years with George Scott (first husband)

Her shortest marriage: 36 hours to Fred Chadwick (oh, Fred)

Her last husband (so far): Glynn “Scotty” Wolfe. The two married as a publicity stunt, since Wolfe was the Guinness World Record holder for most married man. Linda Lou Wolfe became his 29th bride. He died shortly before their first anniversary.

Heterosexual Couples Opt for Same-Sex Civil Union Proceedings

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Thu, 02/19/2009 - 11:31am

What if marriage looked something like this: a simple, 15-minute ceremony; options for joint benefits and tax filing; dissolution by means of a formal, signed letter with no claim to the other's money.

If this sounds like a civil union with benefits, that's because it is. And it appeals to hundreds of thousands of heterosexual couples, who have opted for the Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS), which France initially designed for same-sex couples wishing to tie the knot.

In fact 90% of those who choose a PACS are heterosexual — around 135,000 of the 150,000 couples a year, reports The Telegraph.

With a current marrying generation detached from religious marriage ceremonies and the increasing cost of divorce proceedings, the article states, the solidarity pact is a practical alternative.

Texas Bill Would Force Divorcing Couples to Take "Marriage Classes"

Posted to by M Haas on Wed, 02/18/2009 - 9:34am

No-fault divorce in Texas is about to get contentious. I present HB 480.

In an attempt to look out for the interests of children, a Texas bill has been proposed which would force couples with dependent kids, and who have mutually agreed to a no-fault divorce, to first take a 10-hour crisis marriage course — which can run up to $200/hour. Whaaa??

Oh, and by the way…the state of Texas ain't footing the bill.

Republican Rep. Warren Chisum (proud father of proposed HB480) states that "having children raised with a mother and father is the desire of my heart," and believes his bill "can save emotional heartache." But advocates against domestic abuse point out this bill could pose difficulties for abused spouses looking for a way out of a bad situation.

Woman Narrowly Avoids Jail Time for Emailing Ex

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 11:44am

Be careful the next time you get something off your chest and click “send” — in the Lone Star state, at least. While it’s not illegal to express yourself (hello, First Amendment), several Texas counties prohibit "vulgar, profane, obscene or indecent language, in person, in writing or by telephone."

According to The Houston Chronicle, an Austin woman learned about the mandate firsthand. While her ex’s feeling may have been hurt, Gayle Magness's criminal record suffered a greater blow: She was sentenced to 18 months for her evil emailing ways.

Magness sent 84 emails to her ex, detailing his sexual ability, weight, and current wife. The couple divorced in 2004, and Magness was sentenced to a year and a half of jail time in 2007, which was then reduced to a two weekends in jail and community supervision. (Imagine having to write that into your planner? 2/28 to 2/29: “Pick up dry cleaning; hit the slammer.”)

Wife Divorces Husband Behind His Back

Posted to by Maureen Dempsey on Mon, 02/16/2009 - 3:22pm

The black widow, the conniving ex, the money-grubbing gold digger. Women have all sorts of stigmas to overcome when it comes to marriage and money.

I have to say, this does nothing for our good name: a Korean woman allegedly brought a stand-in for her husband to court, allowing her to obtain a divorce, spousal support, sole custody of the couple’s four-year-old daughter, and all of their property. All without her husband’s knowledge, reports The Korea Times.

The unnamed man was away on business in Dubai for a little less than a year. About six months into his trip, Sneaky Wife filed for divorce, claiming mutual consent. When both parties were required to appear in family court, someone claiming to be her husband stood before the judge, agreed to the split, as well as to handing over just over $900,000 in compensation, $2000 a month for his ex’s living expenses, and all of their property—worth about $356,000.
