... and that's part of what makes my split w/ my husband so difficult. my in-laws have *always* liked me, and it's completely mutual. i won the in-law jackpot. i only hope i can keep them in my life to some extent, now.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If they're nice now, they'll probably stay that way. Now's the time they should be at their meanest, just to scare you off. :)

Excellent Post!

Excellent post Naomi! My ex mother in-law still calls and tells me how much she loves me even though she made it perfectly clear through the marriage to the Dick that she hated ever inch of my being and that I was no where near good enough for her son. Now all of sudden she wants to be my best friend. Too little too late...this from the same woman who called shortly after the separation and yelled at me for doing everything just to spite the ex. Funny how things change. All my best!

In-laws make great out-laws

Naomi -- absoutely true. I agree with you 100 per cent. I have always felt that a good potential next husband (if I EVER decide to go that way again) would be one who was widowed, orphaned and childess. Does this make me a cold person? Heh Heh Heh

Can I Divorce My In-Laws?

One of my favorite parts of being
divorced is not having in-laws anymore. The freedom from all that
extra censure and pressure cannot be overstated.

One of my least favorite parts of being
part of a couple again is that you get yourself a brand spanking new
set of in-laws, and they're often worse than the last.

The thing about in-laws is that they
never like you. You're never good enough. You're never a good
enough wife, you're never a good enough mother, you're never a
good enough housekeeper. Nothing you do will ever meet the
expectations placed upon you because they put those expectations in
place years before either you or your partner were even born.

Some in-laws are obvious in their
dislike of you. While this makes for some confrontational situations,
nobody looks at you like you're crazy when you say your in-laws
don't like you. Other in-laws — like, say, mine — are not obvious
in their dislike. They are passive aggressive and make snarky
comments with a big smile on their face, while asking you if you'd
like more Merlot.

I wonder sometimes if it's possible
to divorce the family without divorcing the man. And while wondering
that, I wonder if divorcing the family could lower the divorce rate
by an astronomical percent. Worth thinking about.
