Arizona Coach Makes Permanent Cut

College basketball coach Lute Olson filed for divorce this week on the same day he announced he would not be returning to coach his Arizona Wildcats for the rest of the 2007-2008 season.

In a statement released Thursday night, Olson stated he would be extending his leave from the team due to "personal issues within my family". His lawyer has also said that the marriage is broken with no real prospect of reconciliation. Of course, makes you wonder what was in that divorce petition, but according to Arizona law, public scrutiny can't happen until everyone has been served or 45 days have passed.

His wife, Christine Olson, does know, though, so don't fret about that. She's already released a statement saying she is dedicated to the marriage and to her husband, even though news of his decision was "devastating". She was in New York this week when her husband filed the petition.

Something's obviously happened here, but neither of them really address it as anything other than "a difficult and private matter", which is no fun for us gossip hounds. The two have been married since 2003, and it is the second marriage for both. Lute's first marriage ended when his wife died of ovarian cancer.

There is hope that once everyone has retained counsel the divorce can be settled in an amicable way. I suppose that remains to be seen, though. Christine is a prominent businesswoman and Lute is a winning college coach. Competition doesn't just end at the courtroom door — unfortunately it usually intensifies.
