Divorce In India

We've written recently about the increasingly progressive divorce laws and corresponding rise in the divorce rate in China. But there are similar changes brewing in India as well.

Just like in China, more young Indian men and women are seeking divorces for all of the same reasons they do in China or here-incompatibility, adultery, mismatched expectations or career ambitions. What's interesting in India is that a lot of women are filing divorce petitions, which was unheard of before.

Still, it seems that being able to file for divorce doesn't mean too much in what is an extremely patriarchal society. A recent editorial in the Times of India calls on the nation to allocate more resources and support to divorced men and women and their children.

The other interesting thing is that the attitude about divorce, especially among young people, seems to be the same around the world. The 20- and 30-somethings in India and China see divorce the same way we do in North American — the end of one stage of your life and the beginning of another. The fact that we're moving to a point where divorce is no longer considered "the end" can only be a good thing.
